Overview

Responsibilities

• Create wireframes, mockups, prototypes, process flows and design specifications.
• Conduct user research, interviews, workshops and usability testing
• Translate business requirements into user-centered designs.
• Design and test experiences across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
• Collaborate with product owners, business analysts, developers and curriculum experts throughout the project lifecycle.
• Gather user feedback and continuously improve designs based on testing and business needs.
• Ensure designs meet accessibility standards and support inclusive user experiences.
• Create and maintain design documentation, design systems and reusable UI components.
• Elicit, document and validate business requirements, user needs and process requirements.
• Analyze current and future state business processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Develop user stories, use cases, business rules and functional requirements.
• Facilitate workshops and stakeholder sessions to gather requirements and build consensus.
• Support requirements traceability and ensure solutions align with business objectives.
Mandatory Qualifications
UI/UX and Product Design – 45%
• Experience as a UX Designer, UI Designer, Product Designer or similar role.
• Experience designing user interfaces and digital experiences for web-based applications.
• Experience creating user journeys, service blueprints, process flows, wireframes, mockups and interactive prototypes.
• Experience designing responsive applications for desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
• Experience translating business and user requirements into user-centred designs.
• Experience designing intuitive workflows for complex business processes.
• Experience applying a product mindset and user-centred delivery approach through discovery, design, validation, release and continuous improvement.
• Experience working collaboratively within agile product teams to define MVPs, validate assumptions and support product roadmaps.
• Experience developing personas, user groups, journey maps, task flows and user-needs statements.
• Experience designing end-to-end services, including digital and non-digital interactions, notifications, support processes and exception scenarios.
• Experience validating concepts and solutions through prototypes prior to development.
• Experience designing AI-assisted user experiences and workflows.
• Experience designing interfaces that support human review, validation and approval of AI-generated content.
• Experience designing applications that comply with AODA and WCAG accessibility requirements.
• Experience applying the Ontario Design System or similar design standards.
• Experience creating and maintaining design systems, patterns and reusable UI components.
• Experience embedding privacy and security by design principles into user experience design.
User Research and Usability Testing – 20%
• Experience planning and conducting user research, interviews, workshops and usability testing.
• Experience managing end-to-end research activities, including participant recruitment, testing, analysis and reporting.
• Experience gathering and analyzing user feedback and translating findings into design improvements.
• Experience recruiting and engaging representative user groups, including users with accessibility needs.
• Experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research.
• Experience developing and executing usability testing plans.
• Experience conducting accessibility testing using manual and automated approaches.
• Experience supporting screen-reader testing using tools such as JAWS, NVDA or VoiceOver.
• Experience using accessibility evaluation tools such as axe, WAVE or similar technologies.
• Experience validating designs through iterative testing and research-informed decision making.
Agile Delivery and Technical Collaboration – 20%
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments using Azure DevOps, Jira or similar tools.
• Experience translating research findings and business requirements into user stories, functional requirements and backlog items.
• Experience gathering, documenting and validating business and functional requirements.
• Experience conducting business process analysis and current-state/future-state assessments.
• Experience developing user stories, use cases and business process models.
• Experience contributing to sprint planning, backlog refinement, sprint reviews and retrospectives.
• Experience breaking user experience and design work into implementable delivery increments.
• Experience testing concepts and assumptions early within the design process.
• Experience supporting MVP delivery while maintaining accessibility, privacy and user experience requirements.

• Experience designing secure and user-friendly workflows involving role-based access, approvals, notifications and information management processes.
Communication, Facilitation and Delivery Coordination – 10%
• Strong communication, facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Experience facilitating discovery sessions, workshops, requirements discussions and design reviews.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary delivery teams.
• Experience collaborating with business users, product owners, subject matter experts, developers, accessibility specialists, privacy advisors and security teams.
• Experience coordinating UX activities, dependencies and deliverables across multiple stakeholders.
• Experience documenting requirements, design decisions, research findings and recommendations.
• Experience presenting research findings, design recommendations, risks and decisions to both technical and executive audiences.
• Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet project deadlines.

• Working knowledge of the Ontario Digital Service Standard, including user research, service design, accessibility, iterative delivery, privacy, security and performance measurement.
• Experience within the Ontario Public Service or broader public sector.
